  11. Well, you live and you learn! I traded my Supra 28.8 for a Sportster
  12. 28.8 some 6 months ago, despite all the words of caution -- temperate
  13. and not so temperate -- simply because my ISP was using sportsters. I
  14. felt that with the reputation they had, USR might have a problem but
  15. that they would surely take care of both the problem and their loyal
  16. customers. I simply could not believe that any company would be so
  17. cavalier.

  19. To tell the truth, I haven't had much problem with it, although
  20. support IS, for all intents and purposes, NON-EXISTENT.

  22. But I recently got the 33.6 upgrade chip. It was difficult to
  23. install--actually the difficulty came in trying to extract the old
  24. chip. USR sends a "tool" (a generous description for a cheap,
  25. worthless, Cracker Jack prize) and the tool bent before the old chip
  26. ever even budged. Finally, in desperation I pried the old chip out
  27. with one prong of a non-magnetic tweezers (came with a computer tool
  28. kit)but I felt nervous every second of the way as the plastic casing
  29. around the chip seat seemed in imminent danger of cracking. After that
  30. the new chip popped right in and in minutes I was up and running.

  32. Data transmission seems fine although I have yet to see a 33.6
  33. connection and only one above 288 -- 288 connections are normal but no
  34. more certain with the new chip than before.

  36. BUT!! Fax transmission has gone completely to hell. Winfax won't work
  37. right, and neither will Procom+2.1. NOBODY, but nobody wants to take
  38. responsibility and USR is stonewalling... as usual.

  40. Datastorm said enter at+fts=8. I get "ERROR". Datastorm says something
  41. is wrong with the modem. USR is mum as usual.

  43. So today I extracted the "new" chip -- the 336 upgrade -- and
  44. reinstalled the old rom (STILL tight as rubber castration ring) but
  45. GUESS WHAT!!?? The fax functions seem to be working fine now. I still
  46. get "ERROR" when I enter at+fts=8, but procom, at least, is now faxing
  47. like it was programmed that way and although I haven't' tried winfax
  48. yet, I got this tingling-all-over-feeling that it will work fine...

  50. And USR can shove it! They will NEVER get my business again!
